6" Calathea
Calathea Species
Calathea are eye-catching. Their multitude of colors, patterns, and stripes have made them a very popular houseplant. Being native to Central and South America, Calathea love warm, humid space, and are very sensitive to cold and cooler temperatures. To increase the humidity around your plant, you can place a humidifier in the same room, lightly mist the leaves with water once a week, or place your plant on a tray filled with pebbles and water. If you choose the pebble tray, make sure the bottom of the pot is not touching the water.
Grows best in filtered, indirect light or light shade. Exposure to full, direct sunlight will cause burning to the leaves and cause the vibrant patterns and colors to fade. Rotate your plant every 1-2 weeks, so all sides get an equal amount of light and to keep your plant growing evenly.
Water when the top two inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Calathea like having soil that is moist but not waterlogged. After watering, discard any excess water that has collected underneath your plant.
For optimal growth, fertilize your plant once a month during the growing season with a 50/50 solution of liquid fertilizer and water. Does not need fertilizer during the Winter months.
Calathea do not require regular pruning to grow well. As the leaves naturally wilt and turn brown, simply trim them off with shears or scissors as close to the base of the stem as you can get.
