6" Umbrella Tree - Scheff Hawaiian
Schefflera Arboricola
Available with solid green foliage, or green variegated with creamy white. This plant gets its name from how the glossy leaves droop gracefully from their stalk, like an open umbrella. Being a tropical plant, Umbrella Trees grow best in rooms that aren't too hot or too cold, and have high humidity, like a kitchen or a bathroom.
Grows best in bright, but indirect, sunlight. Exposure to full, direct sunlight will cause burning to the leaves. If your plant starts to get leggy or floppy (looks like its stalks have been stretched), then your plant is probably not getting enough light.
Water thoroughly when the soil begins to dry out. To check, stick your finger into the soil to your knuckle. If the soil feels dry, it's time to water your plant. Reduce the amount of water your plant gets during the Winter, as your plant will naturally grow less during the Winter months. Yellowing and dropped leaves are a sign that you might be watering your plant too much.
For optimal growth, fertilize your plant every other week during the growing season (Spring and Summer) with a 50/50 solution of liquid fertilizer and water.
Pruning off leggy and overgrown stalks can help promote fuller growth from your plant. Umbrella Trees respond well to pruning, quickly resulting in a fuller, bushier plant.
