8" Boston Fern H.B.

Nephrolepis Exaltata

Boston Fern is an easy to care for houseplant and the quintessential potted fern. Like with most ferns, Boston Ferns grow quickly when they are young plants, but become slow-growers as they mature. Though they do grow best in very humid conditions, they are also able to slightly increase the humidity in the room as well. If the humidity gets too low for your plant, the leaf tips will turn brown. Lightly mist with water once a week to help increase the humidity around your plant. Keep away from drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Sun_PartialShade.png Like most ferns, Boston Ferns grow best in bright, indirect light or filtered morning sun. Too much shade will make your plant look sparse, but too much sun may cause the leaves to burn.
Water2.png Ferns grow best in lightly moist soil during the growing season (Spring and Summer). Water once a week, once the top inch of soil is dry to the touch. To check, stick your finger into the top inch of soil. If it feels dry, it's time to water. Cut back to watering every other week during Fall and Winter. The fronds may start to droop if the soil is too dry.
Fertilize monthly during Spring and Summer with a 20-10-20 liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.
Boston Ferns respond well to extreme pruning, which encourages new, bushy growth. Boston Ferns produce their new fronds out of the middle of the plant. To prune your fern, remove all browning leaves and leafless stems, and remove all of the side fronds and branchs at the base of the plant with shears or scissors. The best time to prune your plant like this is when it has just been repotted, but it will still respond well if you don't repot first.
