6" Dieffenbachia - Camille
Dieffenbachia Species
Dieffenbachia come with many different variations to the patterning on its leaves. Some varieties have mostly green leaves, some have mostly creamy white leaves, and many varieties have differing levels of marbling. Being a tropical plant, Dieffenbachia grow best in rooms that aren't too hot or too cold, and have higher humidity, like a kitchen or a bathroom. If the temperature drops below 15°C/60°F, your plant is likely to start dropping its lower leaves, looking more like a miniature palm tree.
Grows best in bright, but indirect, sunlight. Exposure to full, direct sunlight will cause burning to the leaves. Like most plants, Dieffenbachia will slowly grow toward the direction the light is coming from; rotating your plant every month or so will help keep its growth balanced.
Water thoroughly when the soil begins to dry out. To check, stick your finger into the soil to your knuckle. If the soil feels dry, it's time to water your plant. Remember that the bigger your plant gets, the more water it needs, so check the soil at least once a week to avoid it drying out too. Discard any excess water that has drained out the bottom of the pot.
For optimal growth, fertilize your plant every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a 50/50 solution of liquid fertilizer and water.
Lower leaves will turn brown, drying up and curling in on themselves as they age. When these leaves get dry enough, they should be easy to remove with a small tug at the base of the stem. Otherwise, they are easily trimmed with shears or scissors. If pruning with shears or scissors, be sure to get as close to the base of the stem as possible.
